Nucleoplasty Overview

Nucleoplasty In India

The Nucleoplasty procedure is done with local anesthetic and only takes about 30 minutes to complete. The patient can go home immediately. Most patients return to work in about a week, and are told to limit vigorous physical activity for a few weeks.

Disc Decompression-Decompressing the nucleus of the disc is a proven technique for relieving disc herniation, and for treating the pain symptoms it causes. Similar to letting air out of a bicycle tire, removing tissue from the center of a disc causes a reduction of pressure within the disc. This in turn leads to a reduction in the pressure that the disc applies to other parts of the body, such as nerve roots or the spinal cord.

To perform the procedure, a micro-engineered alloy transmitter is introduced into the disc while the patient is awake, requiring only a topical anesthetic and light sedation. Radio wave signals are sent through the transmitter into the jelly-like nucleus of the herniated disc. The radio waves produce a low-temperature ionized gas that breaks up molecular bonds in the spongy nucleus, removing tissue volume.

Nucleoplasty is a newly developed procedure designed to decompress herniated discs. It is sometimes referred to by the name Percutaneous Discectomy. This procedure is minimally invasive, using a super thin catheter to gain access to the bulging disc. A tiny radio transmitter is inserted into the disc nucleus through the catheter. This transmitter emits radio waves that break up the material in the nucleus, decreasing the amount of nucleus material putting pressure on the bulging disc wall. Usually, this procedure will cause the disc to shrink back to its original size and shape, eliminating pressure on the nerve or nerve root.

To relieve nerve pressure and leg pain, surgery usually involves removing part or the entire damaged disc. This is called a discectomy. At our practice, this procedure can often be done utilizing minimally invasive techniques. Minimally invasive surgery uses smaller incisions and specialized technology such as microscopes and endoscopes ("mini-video cameras"). Microdiscectomy and minimally invasive techniques often result in quicker patient recovery times compared to traditional techniques, as they reduce trauma to muscles and minimize blood-loss during surgery.
