Overview

Minimally Invasive Back Surgery

Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery allows the surgeon to make smaller incision in the skin and avoid large muscle retraction. Minimally invasive surgery uses microscopic visualization and minimal access through small incision. Endoscope is a thin telescope instrument in which tiny video camera and light is connected and it is passed through a small incisions and the camera will send the images to a screen in the operating room.Small tubes are then inserted through other small incisions. Special surgical instruments are inserted through these tubes and used to perform the surgical procedure.

In spine surgery, minimally invasive surgical techniques are used to treat:
Procedures include:

Minimally Invasive Anterior Cervical Discectomy
Anterior cervical discectomy is a procedure used by spine surgeons to remove a herniated disc. The standard discectomy requires an open surgery transverse or longitudinal incision. Today however the disc can be removed utilizing a minimally invasive approach not requiring fusion.

This procedure takes about 45 minutes under general anesthesia with spinal monitoring for maximum patient safety. The skin over the involved disc is identified with the use of fluoroscopy. A needle is passed through the skin and soft tissue for a short distance into the disc, and an arthroscope is passed over the needle into the disc.

The inside of the disc is then visualized ad approximately one half of the disc is removed, the posterior one half. This is performed with specifically made small instruments that remove the tissue. The disc is also softened and ablated with a radiofrequency probe and a laser. A Band-Aid size dressing is applied and cervical collar is used for approximately two weeks.
